Promote a Healthier Planet with Your Flower Choices

Earth Day serves as our yearly reminder of the importance of environmental conservation and sustainability. By embracing eco-friendly practices such as reducing waste, conserving energy, and supporting sustainable products and initiatives, we can collectively work towards a healthier planet. There are four ways this can be done with flower and plant choices.

1.Locally sourced, organic, seasonal blooms

Locally grown flowers have a lower carbon footprint since they require less transportation and help sustain local economies while promoting environmental sustainability. Seasonal blooms are abundant and require fewer resources to grow. Organic plants and flowers are cultivated without the use of synthetic pesticide, herbicides, or fertilizers. These practices help protect soil health, preserve biodiversity, and minimize harm to ecosystems and wildlife.

2.Natural and eco-friendly floral foam alternatives

Traditional floral foam, also known as oasis foam, is non-biodegradable and can release harmful chemicals into the environment. Consider using natural and eco-friendly alternatives such as chicken wire, floral frogs, egg cartons or cardboard, or reusable floral foam made from biodegradable materials like plant-based foam or recycled paper products.

3.Reusable or biodegradable containers

Choosing reusable or biodegradable containers such as glass, ceramic, bamboo, or compostable plant-based plastics avoids littering the earth with single-use plastic containers. Reusable containers can be repurposed or returned to florists for reuse, while biodegradable options minimize waste and environmental impact.

4.Composting and recycling

Responsible disposal of floral waste includes composting organic materials and reusing or recycling non-biodegradable elements. Composting floral scraps such as trimmings, leaves, and stems reduces landfill waste and contributes to soil health. Recycling containers and packaging materials helps minimize environmental impact and conserves resources.

Earth Day inspires us to make mindful and meaningful choices that promote environmental stewardship and contribute to the well-being of our planet. As a community, we can help by recycling vases, baskets, and other floral containers into our shop instead of collecting dust in our homes or throwing them away. Selecting plants such as spathiphyllum (peace lily), sansevieria trifasciata (snake plant), and epipremnum aureum (pothos plant) as home décor also contribute to improving our environment.
