Petal It Forward

Petal It Forward

October is here! While we love celebrating all your events and holidays throughout the year, October holds one of our favorite events, Petal It Forward. This year, Petal It Forward takes place on Wednesday, October 16, 2024 in all 50 states. The Society of American Florists started this goodwill initiative nine years ago by handing two flowers to an unsuspecting stranger while urging them to keep one and pass on the other to illustrate the positive health benefits of giving and receiving flowers. While flowers have a multitude of positive impacts, this month we’re going to highlight five.

The Impact of Flowers on Stress

To reduce stress and unwind, color your world with flowers to give yourself some joy. Peppering your house with small doses of calm allows you to experience flowers in all new ways. Adding flowers to indoor environments results in a statistically significant and meaningful reduction in stress.

Flowers Boost Seniors’ Well Being

Rutgers conducted a six-month behavioral study on the health effects of flowers on senior citizens that showed that flowers ease depression, inspire social networking, and refresh memory. After receiving flowers, 81 percent of seniors who participated in the study had a reduction in depression symptoms, 40 percent gained more social contacts, and 72 percent scored higher on memory tests than seniors who did not receive flowers.

Flowers and Plants Promote Productivity

Constant fluctuations in unemployment, productivity, consumer confidence, and major economic factors make it important for businesses to gain and maintain a competitive edge. The answer is a happy and productive workforce and a research team at Texas A&M University explored the link between flowers, plants, and workplace productivity. During the study, both women and men demonstrated more innovative thinking, generating more ideas and original solutions to problems in the office environment that included flowers and plants.

Flowers Impact Employee Commitment and Well-Being

A research team at Harvard found that an environment that includes a sense of purpose, trust, and quality human relationships would foster a happy, committed, productive team. Complex workplaces can be overwhelming and adding small things like flowers to your workspace or other items that might inspire conversations can improve your wellbeing.

The Power of Giving Flowers

A researcher at Rutgers discovered that those who send flowers are viewed as successful, caring, and emotionally intelligent people. Other findings include that both men and women giving flowers are perceived as achieving, strong, and capable people and as being more able to effectively express feelings and take time to understand the feelings of others. Female flower gifters also appear more appreciative of nature.

The simple act of sharing flowers provides so many positive benefits and that’s why Petal It Forward is our favorite event of the year. We want to help improve lives one flower at a time.
