April is prom month, where every teen has an opportunity to shine in their best formal attire. That formal attire extends beyond the dress or suit to accessories, such as a corsage, boutonniere, or other wearable floral arrangement. Adding flowers to formal attire is a centuries old tradition that continues today for high profile events. The tradition began more than a century ago with a man arriving to pick up his date and presenting her family with a bouquet of flowers as a sign of appreciation. Then the woman would select a few flowers from the bouquet to pin to her dress. As more options became available for accessories, the use of flowers shifted to ready-made wearables, the most common of which are the corsage and boutonniere.
The word corsage refers to the bodice of a woman’s dress and a bouquet de corsage was a small bouquet worn on the dress bodice. The use of flowers had multiple meanings, including warding off evil spirits, or simply ensured that you smelled pretty. As time progressed, flowers shifted from the bodice towards the shoulder and then to the wrist after dresses became sleeveless and strapless. The word boutonniere means buttonhole, which is a common flower placement location. Well-to-do men wore them in the top button of their shirt to show off their status. As changes were made to men’s dress shirts so that they were more open at the neck, it became common to wear a boutonniere at the lapel. Today, boutonnieres are commonly worn for proms and weddings and, when boutonnieres match corsages, it’s seen as a symbol of unity, friendship, and love. Order your custom boutonniere here.
Attire and accessories have continued to change through the years making new options like the floral crown, the corsage bracelet or floral ring more popular. Floral crowns are made to adorn the crown of the head in a halo-like design or to accent a hairstyle. Floral rings are mini bouquets designed to be worn on the finger and occasionally extending to a more traditionally styled corsage. For boutonnieres, designs have become more creative as well, with personalization, embellishment, rustic designs and pocket squares all trending.
